Loquat
The loquat (Eriobotrya japonica) is a hardy evergreen tree with large, leathery leaves and clusters of small golden fruit. The fruit is sweet and tangy, a little like an apricot crossed with a plum, and it ripens in late winter and early spring, when there is little other fruit about.
Loquats are easy to grow. They handle a range of soils, take light frosts and cope with dry spells once established. Plant in full sun with room to spread, or prune after fruiting to keep the tree to a pickable size. Netting or bagging the fruit keeps birds and fruit fly off the crop.
