Red Tamarillo
The tamarillo, also called the tree tomato, is a small, fast growing tree from South America. The red variety has glossy, egg shaped fruit with tangy, savoury sweet flesh. Scoop it out with a spoon and a little sugar, or use it in chutneys, sauces and desserts.
Tamarillos grow quickly and often fruit within a couple of years, with the fruit ripening through autumn and winter. They have shallow roots and soft wood, so plant in a sheltered spot out of strong wind, in full sun with soil that drains well. Keep them watered and protect them from frost.
